Banned Books and Trouble with the Religious Crowd {banned book week}

Banned Books b/c they just couldn't get along with the religious groups. Children Classics, Wizard of Oz, Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, Charlotte's Web, Harry Potter, Narnia, Dark Materials, Bible, and Hunger Games, YA Lit, Adult. Inspiring. Ridiculous Reasons to Ban Books. Alohamoraopenabook Alohamora Open a Book http://alohamoraopenabook.blogspot.com/

Books get banned for all sorts of reasons.  Today and the rest of this week I will be sharing book lists full of great books that have been banned or attempted to have been banned for ridiculous reasons.

Today, our group of trouble maker books may look like classics, and you may have already read most of them, but they just can't get along with the religious groups.

How many of these 9 religious trouble makers have you read?

Was banned b/c animals talk in the story and that places animals on the same level as humans.  This is insulting to God according to some.

The bible was banned b/c of it's religious content.  Now, I've only read 3/4 of the Bible, but  I'm pretty sure the whole idea of the book is religious content.

One summer in undergrad I worked at Barnes and Noble, it was a great gig.  That summer I learned the Bible is the most shoplifted book.  You know, the book that says, "Thou shall not steal." is stolen the most.  Funny or sad? However, maybe the justify the stealing.

This Newbery Honor book is fantastic.  It introduces kids to new vocabulary, makes some people cry, and is a beautiful story of friendship.  However, in the U.K. this book was banned b/c it might offend people.  Seriously, they thought Wilbur, the pig, could possibly offend Muslims.  Thank goodness the Muslim Counsel of Britain asked the book to be put back on the shelves.

This book is the first book in His Dark Materials series.  It was banned for religious content, but many people consider this book to be the anti-Narnia book, or at least the stark opposite to the Narnia series.  Some say that Pullman wrote it in contrast to Narnia b/c he felt Narnia was too obviously religious.  However, I consider it a good series for different reasons from Lewis's Narnia series.

When I was in college I bought this book for my little sister as a present; my mom was hesitant to let her read it b/c she had heard it was about witches and wizards.  I informed my mom it was a fantastic book more about friendship, courage, hard work, and bravery.  She let my sister read it, and even my mom read it later.

Harry Potter was banned and attempted to be banned b/c religious groups felt it was about sorcery and witchcraft.  I personally feel books are often asked to be banned even though the group or individual has never read the book.  I struggle to understand how a group can insist on censoring a book from everyone even though they don't truly know the book.

There is some intense parts in this book; there is a lot of action and a lot of violence in this book.  If this book were to be banned one would've logically thought it'd be for the violence.  However, the logic behind banning books from everyone has never made sense to me.

The Hunger Games was actually banned b/c of its religious viewpoint.  Religious viewpoint is definitely what we all think of when we read this book. ;)

This book was banned for religious content.  Shocking I'm sure.  I personally think, which is why it's one of the books on this list, it's a great book and a good series.

This adorable sweet book was banned int he U.K. b/c there are talking animals and that is offensive to God b/c it places animals on the same level as humans.  Um, that's a bit of stretch especially since the book is about stuffed animals.

The banning of this book is a bit silly to me.  It was thought that this book had no value to children and was theologically impossible b/c it had good witches.  First, since when is a book of no value to children.  The reading, or listening to a book alone has huge benefit on brain development and language development.  Now to the other reason, the theologically impossible statement just makes me laugh.  Seriously?!?  I can't make this stuff up. It's just funny to me.

Please say you at least chuckled reading a few of these reasons.  If you don't laugh at the ridiculousness of it all it might make you cry.  It's always better to laugh; I sure did.

I have also read all 9 (well most of the Bible) of these trouble makers; you?

Happy Banned Book reading!  Definitely check some of them out, if you haven't read them.

ABC See, Hear, Do gets 5 Stars {educational, non-fiction, preschool, kindergarten}

ABC See, Hear, Do: Learning to read 55 words by Stefanie Hohl gets 5 out of 5 stars in my book review. Simple book for parents to use to teach their kids the sounds the letters make. This would be great for preschool, kindergarten, and any kid that struggles to learn the letters' sounds. Phonics, but using actions to help, is good for many that struggle to read. Book, Parenting, Educational, Phonics, Kinesthetic, Fun, Active, Silly. make learning fun. Workbook, Ready and easy to use. I read ABC See, Hear, Do: Learning to read 55 words by Stefanie Hohl, I analyzed it, and I worked through part of the book with my 5 and 2 year old.

I almost rated this educational workbook 4.5 stars.  I really enjoyed the simplicity and ease of use for parents.  I loved that the book was ready to go and that the pictures were big and colorful.

From an educational standpoint I love that this book teaches kids visually, auditorily, and kinesthetically.  As a teacher I know that it is important to teach kids through multiple learning styles, but that technique is often forgotten when it comes to phonics and learning to read.

To be honest, there is so much I really love about this book, but I only give a 5 star rating if the book also has a wow factor.  I didn't have the wow factor with this book, but then I saw on September 1, 2017 ABC See, Hear, Do 2: Blended beginning sounds  comes out and I audibly said, "Ohhhhhh!"

It's when I realized I was excited to continue using this teaching method that I noticed ABC See, Hear, Do truly does have the wow factor.  This book has a different "Wow" then what the librarian side of me usually sees.  This wow speaks to teach in me; the side of me that gets excited for curriculum materials and school supplies.

ABC See, Hear, Do gets 5 out of 5 stars.  This book has a ready to go and simple for parents to use. This book is simple enough for the young audience, and it is also effective for kids to learn.  This book has useful information for the parent/teacher yet the information doesn't overwhelm; it only informs.  Simple and colorful pictures, and a teaching method that had my husband laughing at me as I was practicing by myself sums up why this book earned a full 5 stars.

ABC See, Hear, Do really is a great book to help teach your child the sounds letters make.  If you have a toddler, preschooler, or kindergartner that you want to teach definitely look at this affordable and fantastic workbook/tool.

March Book Three gets 5 Stars {non-fiction, graphic novel, printz award}

March Book Three by John Lewis is an award winning graphic novel series about the civil rights movement. Includes Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X and the Freedom Bridge March. Powerful book. Printz, Coretta Scott King award. Great book and series. YA Literature, Teens, adults, all should read this book. Alohamora Open a Book www.alohamoraopenabook.blogspot.comThis book has it all.  One President of the United States dies, another gives powerful speeches and help make big changes in the country.  With it being Black History Month as well as President's Day I felt this book was an absolute must to share with you today!

Police arrests, murders, determination, perseverance, equal rights, voting, the Freedom March, and so many more shocking events occurred during the civil rights movement.  I absolutely loved March Book Three, and I completely understand why it won the Printz Award, Coretta Scott King Award, and 4 other major awards.

March Book Three by John Lewis is well deserving of these awards, and honestly one of the best books I've read.  This book, is the third and final book in the March series telling the complete civil rights movement from John Lewis' experience.

I give March Book Three 5 out of 5 Stars.  The pictures are fantastic, the story line is great, the pace is quick, the words are powerful, and the events are inspiring.  I learned so much while reading not only this book, but the entire series.  It is a must read for sure, and I am so glad I have it in my personal library.

At the very beginning it took me a second to remember what SNCC stood for b/c book three didn't overlap with the second book.  There is so much I really liked about this book.  I loved that the writing had the perfect balance of facts to teach and dialogue to keep the story going.

I really enjoyed John Lewis' view on JFK's death and the fear he had with Johnson becoming the President.  I think his feelings are relatable to how many feel any time a new President begins his presidency. I was shocked of the events as well as the aftermath from the Freedom Summer, and I was inspired by Fannie Lou Hamer's speech as well as President Johnson's speech.  I was in awe of the fight, dedication, and perseverance Lewis and many other's had to complete their march from Selma to Montgomery.  I was shocked the FBI was wiretapping the Freedom Democratic Party and MLK.   To be honest, I learned so much reading this book and series.

I absolutely think every one high school aged and up should read this book and series.  It is powerful and inspiring.  I loved that Lewis connected the first and last book with the reason for writing these books.  Lewis is brilliant, funny, and I'm so glad he wrote this book.

In regards to the series as a whole, I would have to give the entire March series 5 stars.  It's all well done, connects so well to one another, very informative as well as entertaining. and all around great.  I personally love that Lewis wanted to make this a graphic novel.  I think it reaches a wider audience and the pictures provide the reader with a valuable and necessary connection to the story and the events.

My reviews of March Book One and March Book Two can be found at the links provided.  You definitely need to read this non-fiction series in order, and you most definitely need to give this series a read.  It's fantastic!

Amazon has the following book review from School Library Journal:

"In the final installment in the trilogy, Congressman Lewis concludes his firsthand account of the civil rights era. Simultaneously epic and intimate, this dynamic work spotlights pivotal moments (the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL; the Freedom Summer murders; the 1964 Democratic National Convention; and the Selma to Montgomery marches) through the lens of one who was there from the beginning. Lewis's willingness to speak from the heart about moments of doubt and anguish imbues the book with emotional depth. Complex material is tackled but never oversimplified—many pages are positively crammed with text—and, as in previous volumes, discussion of tensions among the various factions of the movement adds nuance and should spark conversation among readers. Through images of steely-eyed police, motion lines, and the use of stark black backgrounds for particularly painful moments, Powell underscores Lewis's statement that he and his cohorts "were in the middle of a war." These vivid black-and-white visuals soar, conveying expressions of hope, scorn, and devastation and making storied figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Fannie Lou Hamer feel three-dimensional and familiar. VERDICT This essential addition to graphic novel shelves, history curricula, and memoir collections will resonate with teens and adults alike."

This series is superb, and though I wouldn't have anticipated it winning the Printz Award (the best book for young adults) this year, I am so glad it did.  It is well deserving.

Have you read the March trilogy yet?  What did you think?

Happy Powerful Inspiring and Such a Valuable Historical Graphic Novel Reading

The Ultimate Grilled Cheese

The Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich kids enjoy buy adults absolutely love. This sandwich has the best flavors. So flavorful with honey, basil, tomatoes, and havarti cheese. Delicious. Alohamora Open a Book http://alohamoraopenabook.blogspot.com/ simple, fast to make, easy to make, amazing, comfort food, lunch, dinner, quick, fun, warm

Happy 2017!  What better way is there to start off the new year than with the best?!

This sandwich is the absolute best grilled cheese sandwich. Ever.  It is truly The Ultimate Grilled Cheese.

The flavors are perfect with the honey, basil, tomatoes, and Havarti cheese.  The soft and gooey center goes perfectly with the crunchy buttery bread.  The entire flavor and texture combination make it the best grilled cheese sandwich.

This is the perfect sandwich for those cold days, days you need a quick lunch or dinner, and days you just need a little extra comfort found in a delicious meal.  Kids will enjoy this grilled cheese, but adults will love it.

My sister shared this recipe with me, and I am forever grateful.  My grilled cheese days will never be the same again.  My sister apparently got the recipe or idea for the recipe from Oprah about 13 years ago.  My family went to visit her family in Nebraska this last October.  It gets a lot colder than Arizona and the wind cuts through you. One day for lunch after we had been outside with the kids, and I was a little chilled, she introduced me to this.  It was amazing!  My taste buds were happy.

I almost bought a panini/sandwich maker for this sandwich alone b/c that is how my sister made the sandwich and I had to recreate it.  My husband helped prevent that impulse purchase, and, as a result, I learned I could get the same texture and look from my grill pan.  You could do this on a griddle as well.  Basically, you can make this sandwich with whatever you have.  Basically, you just need to make this sandwich.

The Ultimate Grilled Cheese
Recipe: My Sister
Active Time: 10 minutes
Inactive Time: 0
Servings: 1

Ingredients:
2 bread slices
butter
honey
2 Havarti cheese slices
2 tomato slices
dash basil, dried (can do fresh)

Optional: thin ham slices

Directions:

  1. Heat your griddle or grill pan to medium to low heat.  If you have a panini/sandwich maker heat that up.
  2. Butter the outside of both slices of bread.
  3. Evenly spread honey on the inside of both slices of bread.
  4. Place Havarti cheese on top of the honey on both slices of bread.
  5. Place your tomato slices on one side of the sandwich.  I've used sliced grape tomatoes, and it works just as marvelously.
  6. If you want to add ham to your sandwich do this on the bread slice without tomatoes.
  7. Place fresh basil on top of the tomatoes, or sprinkle dried basil on top of the tomatoes.
  8. Put your bread slices together to build your sandwich, and place the sandwich butter side down on the heated pan.
  9. Cook your sandwich to your desired crispiness.
  10. Enjoy!

Happy Ultimate Grilled Cheese sandwich eating!

My 25 Favorite Christmas Books for 2016 {Picture Book List}

Do you do the Christmas Book Advent? We don't wrap up 25 different books b/c I am lazy and to be honest we read too much.  I'm pretty sure it would torture my son to have to wait every single day.

I have close to 40 Christmas books near our Christmas tree this year, but these are my 25 Favorite Christmas Books for 2016 and they are all being read almost daily by my son.

Some of these books are new, some of them are old, but all of them are fantastic books.  You definitely need to check them out.

In regards to Christmas Traditions we may not do the picture book advent, but every year we get a new Christmas book.  I wrap it up and the kids open it up on Christmas Eve.

It's a pretty great tradition that I love as much as my kids love it.  All of our previous "Christmas Eve" books are on this list, b/c they are amazing. The Last Christmas Tree, The Polar Express, A Bad Kitty Christmas, Bear Stays Up, Tacky's Christmas, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, are our previous Christmas Eve books. This year we are getting The Gingerbread Man Loose at School.

I love adding great books to our personal collection, and I love this time of year.

Do you have any book holiday traditions?  I  love hearing any others.

Happy Reading and Happy Holidays!

My 25 Favorite Christmas Books for 2016

This story about a gingerbread and Santa is funny, refreshing, and done with the same rhythm and rhyme as ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas
Best for Kindergarten to 3rd grade.

This book is simple and short, but it shares a valuable lesson about gifts given and the real meaning of Christmas.
Best for Toddlers to 3rd grade.

Another simple story, but a fun one especially geared to the cat lover.
Best for Toddlers to 2nd grade, and Cat Lovers of all ages.

If the author’s name sounds familiar it’s b/c she wrote the popular Goodnight Moon.  This story, is simple in text, and it tells the story of Jesus’s birth.  The best book I have read about the story of Jesus’s Birth for young children.
Best for Toddlers through 2nd grade.

We love The Pout Pout Fish in my family, and this Christmas story version is pretty darn cute as well.  The repetitious phrases are great for the young kiddos, and the rhythm is always on par with the Pout books.  Definitely check this one out.
Best for Toddlers through 3rd grade.

Have you read any of the Gingerbread Man books by MurrayThe stories are great, the illustrations are consistent and cute, and the text has great rhythm.  They are just fun.  We love all of them.  This Christmas one has a great message of letting others know you care and appreciate them.
Best for Preschoolers through 4th grade.

If you have not checked out the Maple and Willow books then you need to change that.  The story of two sisters is incredibly relatable for siblings, and they are all really cute stories.  This Christmas Tree story is no exception; it’s a good, cute, and sweet book.
Best for Preschoolers through 4th grade.

I always check out different versions of this classic story, and state that you should buy this book dependent on the illustrations.  The illustrations in Ercolini’s version is modern, funny, and refreshing cool. Definitely check them out.
Best for Kindergartners through 6th grade.

Many of Wheeler’s books are funny with great rhythm; Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum is still a family favorite.  This Christmas story by Wheeler is not really funny, but it is a cute unexpected story with a French twist (France + Christmas tradition + shoes).
Best for 1st through 5th grade.

Beautiful story that will tug at your heart strings and make you smile.
Best for Kindergarten through 4th grade.

This story is long, but it is beautiful as well.  Not as much Christmas but it is more so the birth of Jesus.
Best for 4th grade and up.

If you love the Click Clack Moo books then this one is right up your alley.
Best for Toddlers to 3rd grade.

This is such a fun classic story, though a bit wordy and long, that everyone should read during the Holidays.  I like to read the story and then watch the cartoon as a family.
Best for 3rd through 6th grade.

This scanimation picture book is interactive and fun for many ages.
Best for Toddlers to Adults (I mean, I like it!)

It’s a Sabuda book so the pop-ups are amazing.  This book is simple in words and absolutely beautiful in illustrations.
Best for Toddlers to 2nd grade.

I really love many Palatini books, and the Moosetache books are just fun.  This story about a Moose with some serious hair LOVES Christmas and plans for a great one, but it doesn’t work out as smoothly as he’d like.
Best for Preschool through 3rd grade.

I love this classic Christmas story, and my kids do as well.   I’ve even choked up the last few times I read it to my kids. I'm a crier though. ;)
Best for Toddlers through 3rd grade.

The Bear books are great fun with great rhythm and perfect for the younger kids.  Parents, teachers and librarians will enjoy reading this story as well.
Best for Toddlers through 1st grade.

These Snowmen books are so fun to read, and this Christmas book is as much fun as the others.
Best for Toddlers through 2nd grade.

This book made my previous Christmas book list, but it is such a great read for kids and adults alike.  It’s a little long, so unless your child has a long reading attention span you’ll want to wait until they are at least 1st grade.
Best for 1st through 3rd grade.

We love Tacky the Penguin, and this Christmas version is a fun one.
Best for Toddlers through 3rd grade.

A fun read for kids of all ages.

This simple story line seems awfully similar to how preschoolers behave.
Best for Preschool to 2nd grade.

This is an absolutely fantastic Christmas story kids and adults alike will love.  It’s a sweet story with a great message that stays funny and light hearted.
Best for Preschoolers through 3rd grade.

Turkey Trouble is such a fun Thanksgiving book, and Turkey Claus is a perfect Christmas sequel.  Fun read for boys and girls alike, and this read aloud is fun for parents, teachers, and librarians to read as well.
Best for Toddlers through 2nd grade.

 Happy Christmas Book Reading!
