The past few weeks I've been talking about reluctant readers aka kids that don't like to read.

If you have a reluctant reader check out these 7 Ways to Turn a BOOK HATER into a BOOK READER!

With those steps and the...

Book List for Reluctant Readers in Kindergarten and First Grade
Book List for Reluctant Readers in Second and Third Grade
Book List for Reluctant Readers in Fourth and Fifth Grade

and the book lists I'm giving you today and on future Fridays will help you find the perfect and best book, the right book, for any reluctant reader you may know.

There are a lot of kids who don't like to read.  I was one of them.  All of those reluctant readers are missing out on a ton of awesome and entertaining books, but more importantly those individuals are missing out on the benefits readers experience.

  • Are Less Stressed
  • Have a Larger Vocabulary
  • Have Stronger Thinking Skills
  • Have Better Focus and Concentration
  • Have Better Speaking Skills
  • Appreciate Other Places and Cultures
  • Keep Brain Stimulated
  • Have Better Memory
  • Improves Creativity
  • Are Better Writers

There are many reasons to be or become a reader, and I know every one, no matter the age, can become a reader.

Over the next several weeks I will be sharing with you book lists for reluctant readers aka people that don't like to read.  I have broken the lists down by age.  Today, you get...

Books for Reluctant Readers in

Sixth and Seventh Grade

My Near Death Adventures (99% True) by Alison DeCamp
It's a cool title all about fun things boys will love to read about.

A graphic novel which boys love in general b/c of the pictures and the fact that they are fast reads.  The characters and storyline of this series is just fun.

Stargirl by JerrySpinelli
A fantastic and fun story to read with great themes about being yourself.  One of my favorite read alouds.

A thin humorous novel in a school setting about students giving a teacher a hard time about a pen; this makes a great read aloud as well.

A great adventure/action series that is also in graphic novel format. It is also a movie, but it isn't the best movie (just fair warning).

Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix
An absolute fabulous series that every kid loves; it makes a great read aloud.

Cirque du Freak: A Living Nightmare by Darren Shan
This series is a fast read and a suspenseful read aloud; each chapter will leave you hanging and wanting to keep reading and turning pages.  There is also a graphic novel version of this series.

Knucklehead: Tall Tales and Almost True Stories of Growing Up Scieszka by Jon Scieszka
Scieszka is funny and comes from a crazy family of brothers.  This memoir type book with loads of pictures will having you laughing constantly.  Boys will relate and love the crazy things they do.

Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
This fairy tale/fantasy like story is the first in a fabulous series.  The adventure, storyline, and writing is superb. This is most definitely a great read.

Beastly by Alex Flinn
Flinn has a series of fairy tale remakes like this one.  They are short fun books to read; girls all the way through high school will enjoy these Flinn books.

This hilarious historical fiction book is highly entertaining, and there is even a movie on Netflix currently.  This novel makes a great read aloud as well for grades 5th and up.

This 5th Harry Potter thick like book appears to be intimidating, but a flip through the novel reveals a book that is full of pictures.  A great story that is easy to read, and there is even a movie recently made based on this book.  Selznick has a second book, not a series though but a chapter book full of pictures, called Wonderstruck for future reading.

There you go, awesome books for even the most reluctant reader.

Happy Summer Reading even for the kids who don't like to read!

  1. Ooh! I have a very reluctant reader-- well, he'll read but prefers short simple books and I'd love to challenge him just a bit. There are some great ones on this list; many are from our favorite authors and a few are favorite books we've read a couple of time. Pinned.
