Thorfinn and the Rotten Scots gets 4.5 Stars {middle grade fiction}

Throfinn the Nicest Viking and the Rotten Scots by David MacPhail gets 4.5 out of 5 stars in my book review of this middle grade fiction series. If you like silliness, and books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, this is the book for you. Funny book series boys in 2-4th grade would really enjoy. I have another Thorfinn book for you.  This one is technically the third book in the series, but the Thorfinn the Nicest Viking series does not need to be read in any order.

Thorfinn the Nicest Viking and the Rotten Scots by David MacPhail starts off funny; the very first sentence made me laugh.  The details with the map, illustrations, and even the "mostly true facts" on the timeline are great.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars in my book review.  Thorfinn and the Rotten Scots will be especially loved by boys; even boys that don't like to read will enjoy this one.  This book has funny writing and phrases, a fun story line, plot driven story line, fun interactive games to extend the book at the end, trading cards, and fun pictures.  It's a great book and a fun reading experience.

I personally think this book would be best suited for 2nd through 4th grade, but the publishers think 1st through 3rd grade.  I would only go down to 1st grade in this book if a child is a great reader, comprehends well, and can infer.  If you have a high reading 1st grader then this could be a good fit and series to read.

Amazon had the following book description to give you an idea of the story line.

"Prepare yourself for the wrath of the Norsemen! That is, if you don't mind and it's not too inconvenient...Everyone knows Vikings are ruthless barbarians whose idea of a good time involves pillaging, plundering and feasting. But Thorfinn is no ordinary Viking! He is always polite and happily offers to wash the dirty dishes. Too bad his dad is Harald the Skull-Splitter, Village Chief and the roughest and toughest Viking of them all. On a raiding voyage to Scotland, Thorfinn and his friends Velda and Oswald are kidnapped by Ranald MacRanald, chieftain of the Clan MacRanald, and imprisoned at his crumbling fortress, Castle Mad Dog. Ranald tries to ransom the 'fierce Vikings' but little does he know that his methods of 'torture' (making the Nicest Viking sew with the women and clean the castle from top to bottom) are actually Thorfinn's idea of a brilliant Scottish holiday! Will Chief Harald the Skull-Splitter come to his son's 'rescue' before Thorfinn drives the Rotten Scots crazy with politeness? Thorfinn the Nicest Viking is a funny, illustrated, action-packed new series for young readers who love Horrid Henry and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, set in a world where manners mean nothing and politeness is pointless!"

What do you think?  Are you going to give a fiction Viking book a read.

Happy Middle Grade Fiction Silly Viking reading!

Definitely give this book and series a check-out.  They are great reads, and would be fun to read along with your child.

I received this book from Myrick Marketing in exchange for my review and honest opinion.  All of my thoughts, opinions, and words are my own.
