I read "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett and I was pleasantly surprised. I thoroughly enjoyed the book from front cover to back cover. It is an adult fiction book, but I think a mature teenager would enjoy it. There is nothing inappropriate in the story; it is just a well written story that immerses you in the time period and ends you loving the characters.
The story is set during the 1960's in Jackson, Mississippi during the civil rights movement. The main character is a black woman who is a maid, or "the help," for a white family. The story is told from her point of view, as well as another black woman's point of view.
All in all the book left me with a new understanding and a pleasant story with lovable characters. GIve it a shot and go out of your comfort zone. You will be entertained with a well written story, and come away with more understanding of a place and time in history. Let me know what you think of it, or if there are any stories you have been pleasantly surprised by.
I Loved it too!
