Skipping Christmas

Skipping Christmas book review- Alohamora Alohamoraopenabook.blogspot.comI just read Skipping Christmas by John Grisham.  It's not your typical lawyer fiction book Grisham usually writes, but it's a really fun and fast read that everyone will enjoy.  Plus, at just under 200 pages it is the perfect book to read in December during the holiday rush of everything.

Skipping Christmas was initially published in 2002, and in 2004 the movie Christmas with the Kranks that was based on the book came out.  I had seen the movie years ago, but I just now read the book.  However, just like every other book based movie, the book was better.  Personally, I like Luther and Nora (the main characters) better in the book, and I could relate to their feelings, reasons, and thoughts better.  I would assume that is b/c a book can include more of those details to help you relate to a character, but nonetheless I like the characters better in the book.

Personally, I would give Skipping Christmas 4 out of 5 stars.  It's a great book, fast read, clean read, relateable characters, and a funny and original storyline.  I really have no qualms.  The only reason it didn't get the perfect score was strictly b/c it didn't leave me with a "Wow!" or initiated any deep thoughts/discussions to occur.  It was just a fun read, and it was totally worth the little time it took to read it.

Amazon had the following book description:

"Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That’s just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they’ll skip the holiday altogether. Theirs will be the only house on Hemlock Street without a rooftop Frosty; they won’t be hosting their annual Christmas Eve bash; they aren’t even going to have a tree. They won’t need one, because come December 25 they’re setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. But, as this weary couple is about to discover, skipping Christmas brings enormous consequences–and isn’t half as easy as they’d imagined.

A classic tale for modern times, Skipping Christmas offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy that have become part of our holiday tradition."

Christmas really is much more than all of the hoopla it now is.  I found this story a fun thought/idea of how to rid your life of the hoopla (but maybe not to the same extreme) and really focus on what is most important, the relationships in our life.

Go read or listen to this fast and fun Christmas read.  You will enjoy it!

  1. Finished reading this earlier this week, I liked it. It was fun to read a Grisham book that wasn't too intense.
