Creepy Carrots!

I felt a book about bunnies and carrots was a fitting picture book to share with you all on Easter.  Sure, maybe creepy carrots doesn't sound very Easterish to you, but who needs traditional things all of the time.  Plus, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I really want to go buy it now.

I picked up Creepy Carrots! by Aaron Reynolds and pictures by Peter Brown from the library this past week.   Creepy Carrots! is a Caldecott Honor book this year.  The Caldecott award is for the best pictures in a children's book; therefore, I was sure to include the illustrators name up above. Sometimes I read Caldecott Honor books and the pictures are great, but the story isn't as fabulous.  However, this book was different.  The pictures and the illustrations worked together seamlessly to tell the story in a creepy but funny sort of way.  It is a great book.  You'll love it!

For picture books I'm going to go ahead and give it 5 stars; it earned all five of those stars.  It has a great story line, it's relatable, not completely predictable, and the pictures add to the experience and mood of the story.  As far as who would enjoy this book I would say Creepy Carrots! is a great read for Kindergarten through 4th grade.  Teachers in the upper elementary grades could easily use this book in lessons depicting mood as well as descriptive writing.  Plus, adults will find this book enjoyable to read to their kids.

Creepy Carrots! is a little creepy, but it's a lot of fun.  The pictures are fabulous, the story is unique and fun, and all ages will find this book an enjoyable read.

Go check it out, and enjoy this non-traditional Easter book, or you could just enjoy this book as a fun read in the middle of the week.  No matter what time of year it is, this book is a lot of fun for everyone.
