Hale's language is FAR more grounded than her's, from what I've read. Hale uses concrete metaphors tailored to the characters' realm of experience; McKillip is more figurative. I don't think one or the other is better, although Hale is a bit easier to read (I didn't have a problem reading McKillip, I just felt the 2 stories I read were a bit off.)
