I was asking my husband which recipe I should give y'all today and he immediately said, "Syrup! It's so delicious, you gotta get it out there."

So, today you get the most amazing syrup ever for you waffles, pancakes, and just to dip anything and everything into it when you are feeling especially naughty/unhealthy.

This Rich and Creamy Buttermilk Syrup is amazing, and I have clearly waited far too long to give it to you.

Now you may be thinking making your own syrup seems way too fancy and possibly difficult, but to be honest it is actually fast, easy, and incredibly simple to make.

You may also be thinking that you only like buttermilk for baking or cooking, why in the world would you want a syrup with it.  However, let me be honest, this buttermilk syrup doesn't taste anything like buttermilk.  It really is rich, creamy, buttery, and absolutely my very favorite thing on waffles or pancakes.

For all of those times you have extra buttermilk use a cup of it and make a batch of this syrup.  Store your syrup in the fridge, reheat it in the microwave, and enjoy your syrup amazingness for a good long while.

I've even thrown a cup of buttermilk in the freezer b/c I already made a batch of syrup and I still had leftover buttermilk.  Months later I pulled the buttermilk out of the freezer, defrosted it in the fridge, and then whipped up a batch of this syrup.  The result was amazing syrup.

Lesson learned, you can freeze the buttermilk and make this syrup later and still be happy.

For all of you buttermilk syrup virgins out there, once you go buttermilk you don't go back to maple.

Buttermilk Syrup
Recipe: Alohamora from a friend of a friend a long time ago (weak I know, but that is all I have for you)
Active Time: 10 minutes
Inactive Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 2 cups of syrup

Ingredients:

1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:

  1.  In a large pot melt the butter on low to medium heat.
  2. When the butter is melted turn the heat up to medium and add the sugar and buttermilk.
  3. Stir frequently until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  4. Add the baking soda and stir until it is dissolved.  The syrup will get foamy and frothy at this point.  This is why you started with a large pot.
  5. Remove the pot from heat and stir in the vanilla.
  6. At this point you can use a spoon and scoop it directly onto your pancakes or waffles.
  7. However, you need to let the syrup cool completely before pouring it into a pint size jar.  If you want to pour it into a jar while it is hot/warm you will need to use a large jar.
  8. Store syrup in the fridge.
  9. To reheat the syrup remove the lid and place the jar in the microwave at 50% power for 2-3 minutes.
  10. Enjoy!

Happy rich, creamy, and delicious buttermilk syrup eating/partaking!
